It's pretty frustrating to see that something like Harvey was coming, people knew it was coming, and yet there wasn't much we could do about it anyway.

Wonder if science has anything in mind for the future, because I feel sooner or later people are gonna want to do something in regards to prevention in the future.

Maybe if those people took the multiple warnings to evacuate it wouldn't be that bad. I understand some people simply can't pick up and go that easily, but there's a lot of them that just "toughed it out" and it's costing lives.

Remember when that liberal said Harvey was justice for electing Trump

You can't stop it, you can only mitigate the damage. But the problem there is that people have to care.

The city’s flood system is supposed to protect the public from a 100-year storm, but Bea calls that “a 100-year lie” because it is based on a rainfall total of 13 inches in 24 hours.

“That has happened more than eight times in the last 27 years,” Bea said. “It is wrong on two counts. It isn’t accurate about the past risk and it doesn’t reflect what will happen in the next 100 years.”

Yeah, that's the stuff I had in mind. You'd think after Katrina the entire South would've been extra vigilant so that things like this wouldn't have been nearly as terrible.

I think they are aware of what needs to be done, but redoing infrastructure on a scale that big would be immensely expensive, at least in the mid-twelve digits

some of them couldn't get out for reasons... and as others have mentioned. would be a total ****ing disaster if they left all at once to get out of the war path of the hurricane.

All you can do to defend against hurricanes is have a natural or man-made buffering system off the coast that weakens a hurricane's power by making it hit land earlier. The other thing is to make sure your infrastructure includes up to date flood control systems. Houston has nothing in place to deal with massive flooding so a storm that dumps tons of water is a nightmare. New Orleans is fucked no matter what they do because it's in a sinking hole that's already well below sea level. They can just hope and pray a Harvey doesn't hit them.
