over 1,200 have died

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/aug/30/mumbai-paralysed-by-floods-as-india-and-region-hit-by-worst-monsoon-rains-in-years

Heavy monsoon rains have brought Mumbai to a halt for a second day as the worst floods to strike south Asia in years continued to exact a deadly toll.

More than 1,200 people have died across India, Bangladesh and Nepal as a result of flooding with at least six, including two toddlers, among the victims in and around India’s financial capital.

On Wednesday, police said a 45-year-old woman and a one-year-old child, members of the same family, had died after their home in the north-eastern suburb of Vikhroli crumbled late on Tuesday, and a two-year-old girl had died in a wall collapse.

They said another three people had died after being swept away in the neighbouring city of Thane.

The rains have led to flooding in a broad arc stretching across the Himalayan foothills in Bangladesh, Nepal and India, causing landslides, damaging roads and electric towers and washing away tens of thousands of homes and vast swaths of farmland.

The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) says the fourth significant floods this year have affected more than 7.4 million people in Bangladesh, damaging or destroying more than 697,000 houses.

Damn.

Also, how is it that we don't hear about stuff like this? I watch the news and The Weather Channel frequently and didn't even know this was occurring.

We live in a very Eurocentric/Western-centric/post-colonial world in which we're conditioned to accept that detachment from Eastern societies and their problems is OK.

Also compassion fatigue.

...or it's that news closer to home is more relevant.

I'm not sure Indians are any more aware of our flood than we are of theirs.

I do because I follow sources like BBC but what tends to matter is of course location. National events are going to get more attention than the majority of international ones.

What makes this particular tragic is now underdeveloped and poor a country India is, and their populations are alarmingly high and will pass China in a few decades.

this happened 2 days after I had left the area when I went to visit my family

I don't know about India in particular, but in general other countries are much more exposed to US affairs than vice versa. That's not to mention that the tragedy in India outclasses ours in terms of the sheer number of people affected, so demanding equal (not proportionate) attention and concern the other direction doesn't quite make sense.

And that's something to be said about the US's global media presence, not those countries having a "proper" amount of attention to others' crises.

.............do you think they're heavily covering harvey in India? Because I promise you they aren't.

The news doesn't typically cover the weather on the other side of the planet unless it's a catastrophic natural disaster. So stop spewing bs

political affairs, sure. that has more to do with the US being the most influential country on the planet.

They couldn't care less about our weather issues

You mean like what's happening in India?

This is not a catastrophic disaster. It's disastrous in effect because so many Indians live in slums and in regions with horrendous infrastructure that have no way to prevent flood damage. This happens routinely during the annual monsoon season.

I'm thinking more along the lines of giant earthquakes and tsunamis that kill tens or even hundreds of thousands.

That's interesting, because the flood in Houston, while obviously tragic, is none of those.

................Which is why I doubt you'll see it covered much outside of the US. How is this not clicking for you?

And that's where you're wrong. It's been covered on BBC and The Guardian as well as the three major networks, which broadcast internationally.

And vice covered the Indian floods yesterday, which is how I knew about them. I'm sure most major networks, including the BBC and the guardian, have covered it at some point as well.

The BBC obviously isn't covering the Houston floods as heavily as US based networks are.
