4U is the superior game by far. Gen is pretty bad. If you have homebrew on your 3DS though, the upgraded japanese version of Gen (MHXX) is ok.
But if its just between 4U and Gen, go 4U. The only time I would recommend Gen is if you want a super casual easy Monster Hunter game. ... Copied to Clipboard!

if you're playing online, 4u is active enough but with lots of foreign players (non english) and has plenty of hacked gear floating around - it ruins the experience to see HR2 guys with full white fatalis sets demolishing crap.
MHgen is the one to get imo - although a bit more complex if this is your first MH game because of the different styles. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!
