It's like they had something good going for 3 decades then WHAM, 10 years of boxy body styles that looked like some kid made it out of cardboard.

I consider that time period second worst.

Basically just 80s designs with the sharpness rounded off.

I mean even with as cool as I find the F40, it's not great looking either imo. There are Ferrari's before it and after it that are much better looking.

Plus I'm assuming TC is talking more about just normal cars people had and were popular, not supercars and such.

Well that isn't much of an argument as the normal cars have always looked kinda shitty, even today most average cars like crossovers and hatchbacks are quite ugly.

If we want to throw out "worst decade for car design" out there I think the 70's definitely win that one. It's a lot like the 80's where the only good looking cars were supercars, but the average cars were even worse than they were in the 80's.

I mean you'd be hard pressed to find any decade where the highest end of cars weren't at least able to passably hold up, which like I said even with cars like the F40 and Countach (sp?) they don't really look that great by today's standards and compared to significantly cheaper cars in previous and following decades.

Even look at cars that are still in the obtainable but generally attractive like the muscle cars, the 80's Mustang for example. Compare it to a 60's first gen and a new current gen. It's completely blown out of the water by both.

It is one of the best and most influential, but neither of those things mean the looks hold up. They mean more the innovative use of lighter weight materials such as Kevlar, being the first production car to hit 200mph, etc. It was a monument feat of vehicle engineering and influenced a lot of people to become enthusiasts both with it's unique looks and performance but the looks we're really nothing more than a stepping stone to a better look. After seeing something as legitimately sexy as a 458 for example, it's hard to take an F40 seriously.

It was the era when they started to use a lot more plastic in cars, but that said the 70's still tops it with their cheesy fake wood, ugly chrome, over the top everything really, all while the cars were the slowest they ever were in history. You serious? A 458 feels like it's nothing special in comparison to an F40.

Seeing an F40 in person is like seeing a Ferrari Enzo or a F50 in person, it's very special. The 458 is great looking but very average for a supercar in comparison.

The 458 and F40 are very different cars. The 458 has the expected luxuries and comforts (radio, air conditioning, roll-down windows etc) with a well-furnished interior, whereas the F40 lacks all of those, being essentially a race car given only the mandatory modifications to make it road legal.

Exactly. The 458 is very pedestrian and average for a Ferrari while the F40 was a full blown race special much like the Enzo and La Ferrari were.

I really do like the look of the 458 too though. Yes the whole modern MR supercar is getting to be a very played out look the proportions of the 458 seem to just do it for me. Whenever I played Forza or GT it and the F40 are actually the two Ferraris I'm always drawn to wanting to drive. The late 60s early 70s designs were definitely innovative as fuck but they just don't have that WOW factor imo.

I'm the same. The big difference is how the Ferrari's of the 80's just drive a lot better than the Ferrari's of the 70's and 60's. I mean the 250's are amazing but they are always incredibly expensive even in video games and are just an old fashioned FR grand touring sort of supercar.

The F40 stands out to me as a very unique beast, a bare basic supercar with high-end modern materials built in a way they only could have back when it was made. It redefined the standards for what a supercar could be.

That said I just think most road going Ferrari's from the BB on feel like the start of when Ferreri's entered the category of what we think of when we imagine a modern supercar. It's when they really started to focus on MR road cars, you can feel the change in design philosophy.

Maybe it's the time period I grew up. In the late 90s and early 2000s all this old, outdated, hand-me-down tech was from the 80s, so 80s tech imparts a "low-quality" vibe upon me. But a part of me thinks 80s tech will always be objectively seen as outdated instead of classic. Video games are the biggest exception.

I read an article recently that attributes the "boxiness" of cars in the 70s and 80s to high gas prices. That created an increased premium on keeping weight (and overall size) down, and the way to do that without reducing interior space is with boxiness.

But that might be way off

Seems more like a cost of manufacturing thing. Way easier to produce a bunch of flat panels than aerodynamically contoured ones.

The sports cars of the 90's were gorgeous, though. Supra, RX-7, 300ZX, Z3, MR-2, etc.

As far as the 80's, I think the 70's were kind of weaker. Each decade has it's exceptions, though. I love
70's Camaros over 80's, and the 70's gave us the 240z, one of the most beautiful cars ever, IMO.

*shrug*

All subjective. The 80's were okay. Each decade has it's studs and duds.
