Got into Red Dead Redemption recently, amazing game, controls are a bit sloppy in a GTA4 sorta way but the world they created is just a joy to experience.

Red Dead Revolver in comparison just feels like one of the worst games Rockstar has made. Consider it came out in the GTA3 and Manhunt era it feels oddly linear for a game made by the same people. It just feels like an old game that hasn't aged well these days, a 3'rd person shooter with some very dated mechanics. It also has a completely different feel, sort of a parody in a sense, it's really goofy at times to be honest. The music doesn't seem to fit the atmosphere at times and it generally has more of a JRPG feel at times, very unexpected.

It isn't terrible, but I really don't see myself wanting to play through this game.

Linear isn't a negative.

Definitely isn't, but it is in the case of this game.

The mechanics and gameplay of this game is proof of how the open world was one of the best things about Rockstar games of the era.

Yeah it kinda is like Max Payne only nowhere near as cool or fun or interesting, and the gameplay isn't nearly as good either.

I tried GUN on PC recently and that hasn't aged well either. But maybe it was just a bad port.

Gun hasn't aged that well for sure, it's kinda like Red Dead Revolver; stood out back in the PS2 era but it feels very old and dated after Red Dead Redemption.

That said I think it has aged better than Revolver. It has more of a straight up story feel while Revolver feels like you are just doing linear missions from a hub area.

I think the biggest issue I have with Revolver is how the shooting feels a lot like the shooting from San Andreas. In other words it isn't very good.

I both agree and disagree. I love how ambitious San Andreas was, and I love the accurate cities of GTA 4 and 5. I find the arcade like gameplay of SA fun as hell and the more realistic gameplay of 4 and 5 a lot of fun at times as well.

How long has it been since you played the game?

Nostalgia probably makes the game seem better than it would today.

2 months ago. I always have my PS2 hooked up. It does look really ugly on my tv but I still really enjoy the gameplay and someone like me who is starting to easily get bored with too much downtime prefers the linear route Revolver takes. I admit RDR came at the perfect time around when everyone jumped on the open world wagon but it wasn't played out to death yet. Man does my mind drift when I try playing a game like that now tho :/.
