Now I know if someone with an English speaking background went to a foreign country, they would most likely rely on English as their main form of communication, unless they learned the language, but you'd most likely still get the 'stink-eye' from the locals.

Since we are more or less regressing what is socially acceptable, with the rise of alt right movements. I am curious where this sentiment towards foreigners stand.

For eg. I know a foreign language, with my parents being an immigrant and all, not having the best understanding of English. And while I speak in our native tongue whenever I see them at home, even I speak English with them in the public. I don't know, I just feel like it's the more respectable attitude to have in the company of strangers with diverse background.

I feel a little sad that I can't understand their language at all while they likely have at least a serviceable knowledge of mine.

Depends on the language. Some are nice to listen to and others make me cringe.

I go to the chinese buffet and they talk to themselves and glare at me and then all start laughing and I always feel like they are talking bad about me or something.

It's none of my business what their conversation is so they can speak whatever they want to.

I'm the opposite of you. I like hearing foreign languages. I can't stand dubs (except in anime). Only language i really didn't like was Thai.

I say "this is America, we speak English here" then I throw the ketchup at them because I have a basic understanding of Spanish from high school (thanks Obama) then I'm asked to go talk to my 17 y.o shift supervisor at McDonalds.

I've never actually cared. Doubly so since I've watched anime that didn't have English dubs, or played games in Japanese, as well as living in Arizona where you'll occasionally run into someone who speaks Spanish, not to mention having a friend that's Japanese.

If it's Spanish or German I like to subtly listen in and try to pick out the words I can understand
If it's Chinese I go urgh, because it sounds so harsh and angry
French is nice to listen to
Anything else I'm just like huh, cool.

Interested. I wonder what it's like coming to a country where I don't speak the language. Imagine how scary and intimidating that would be. I also am curious about what language it is, where they learned it, if they came from another country, what their story is. It's like seeing an unfamiliar book cover that is really captivating; I just want to know more. Then again, I speak English, French, and Mandarin, so languages are pretty cool to me.

Usually think to myself "fucking *******" and move on with life.

You see it occasionally where I'm from so I'm kinda used to it. If it's a language I've never heard before I like eavesdropping because it's cool.

I have a basic understanding of many languages and am fluent in at least four different languages so I can usually get a good sense of what they're talking about.

But really it's none of my business and I don't feel offended. I know not everyone is good with languages

This. There are a few languages that are just annoying for me to hear. I won't say which ones since that would probably be considered offensive by the mods, but the people seem to be screaming all the time, especially the elderly ones.

the only "foreign" language I hear around here with any regularity is French, which I speak fluently

I guess when my cousins speak japanese to each other it kinda makes me sad that I can't understand them

and I guess it's the same, albeit to a lesser extent, with other languages that I don't know

Don't care too much unless they spoke English with/near me and then decided to switch it up.

Still though, I don't care too much as I most likely wasn't trying to listen in on the conversation in the first place.
