I feel like Dark Souls, F-Zero, and games of that difficulty... are manageable, mainstream (for gamers at least), and about a sense of satisfaction

Are legendary hard games like Battletoads and Ninja Gaiden "too hard"?

Which games do you think are just flat out impossible, cheap, insurmountable? Do you think any games are, other than poorly programmed ones?

You can also account for difficulty settings. I have no idea how to do level 1 of Ikaruga on "easy", but I wasn't raised on top-down shooters.

I think that no matter how many times I attempt, I'm never going to beat Battletoads. I've never made it past the Snake Pit and every level after that is MUCH more brutal than that one.

I think getting 1000 gamerscore out of the original Geometry Wars is near impossible, so that makes my list. Battletoads, Ghosts & Goblins, and TMNT (not arcade) on NES were games I owned as a kid and couldn't beat.

The Souls games aren't hard if you take it slow like you are supposed to. People who claim those games are hard expect a ninja gaiden-y game. It's not at all.

Ninja Gaiden is definitely a "too hard" game at times. I've set at levels for three hours before. (For seriously a three..... four room stage.)

Super Ghouls & Ghosts is hard in a dumb way. You beat the game, and that's not too bad, but then the game's basically "In order to REALLY beat the game, you have to do it again, but not get hit."

When my friends and I saw that, we were just like... nah.

From recent memory, it's Sayonara Umihara Kawase, which I got for the 3DS. The controls are a bit of a contributer to why it's hard, but some of the jumps expected and the sudden momentum shifts and swings is WAY too precise. Like you can't really pinpoint when you should release either, just that you gotta try over and over til it's the very correct angle and timing. And the worst is that it turns out that they pretty much give you everything you needed from the start to get absolutely all the content. The problem is, I fucking got like 1 of the optional bag out of like 20 in the first 20-30 levels.

To me it comes down to the degree of perfection and/or cheese needed to beat a game. Ninja Gaiden is an example of a game that demands a bit too much perfection to beat consistently imo, sure you can brute force it given enough time but I think it could do with a little tweaking. Some fighting game bosses on extreme difficulties are downright ridiculous and some can't be consistently beaten without luck or cheesy combo strings, not to mention the ones that read your inputs and react faster than a human could possibly hope to. I'm fine with reading inputs if the AI is forced to buffer its responses to human reaction times but some do not do this and its ridiculous.

In trauma center 2, you have to be ingenious to beat the game on the hardest difficulty. This means realizing that you need two stylus' to multitask and exploiting the touch screen by pressing two points at the same time to draw a line instantly

Gonna put a technicality on Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition - Legacy of Bhaal setting.

For the fact that it requires you to use constant cheese exploits, because melee combat is completely impossible due to hilariously improper scaling. Many spells are rendered garbage, or literally useless, as well as Turn Undead.

The overall difficulty of the game doesn't increase too much if you play it by exploiting AI issues, but if you try and play it 'legit', it's absolutely not happening.

I've used Crusader and Vestal a lot. Houndmaster, not so much. I mostly paired him in a party with the Bounty Hunter, Arbalest, and the Man-At-Arms since they all have abilities that involve marking enemies.

I remember The Void being really unforgiving with very obscure game mechanics. But that was more that I had to research to complete the game. I found Super Meatboy very hard. Any platformer with a tiny player character and walls and ceilings lined with spikes tends to make me quit before I try.

I think most games can be beaten with enough practice, maybe look up some tips if you're at a figurative wall.

Then I play things like Faster Than Light. Shit like this is way too RNG based. The player could do nothing really wrong but get destroyed easily. Anything else that is too luck heavy I consider "too difficult".

Pretty much anything for NES or Genesis. People like to call Mega Man hard but really those games are a cakewalk compared to many games of the era.

But in fairness, this is mostly because you have to start the whole game over if you die a few times. Which is a primary reason MM games are easier.

For example, Double Dragon, Super Thunder Blade, Altered Beast, TMNT, Ecco the Dolphin, Rad Racer, Battletoads and Contra off the top of my head are waaaay harder than any Mega Man. And even SMB1, tbh.
