A lot of the gen 1 and gen 2 pokemon could learn moves they had no business knowing.

It's funny how every other "Normal" pokemon could all casually learn fire/ice/electric/water moves. And shit like Rhydon could learn surf

Gen 1 wasn't really kind to a lot of pokemon. Good bug moves were nonexistant. Dragons only had Dragon Rage which does fixed damage.

Most attacks don't hurt the user. Outside of things like Take Down, Double Edge, Wild Edge, and Flare Blitz. The pokemon just uses the move and targets the enemy being unaffected.

Now if Gyarados could learn wild edge that would be a real mystery.

Stone and trade evolution pokemon were especially treated horribly in regards to level up movesets.

Gengar and Machamp are trade evolutions.

But even now in gen 7 I don't believe any pokemon that evolves by stone really has a big learnset. They largely depend on TMs, tutors, and pre-evo moves.

Typo, I meant to say stone and trade evolutions, and that's true, but not quite as bad as in gen 1.
