In America, race has traditionally been defined by the "one-drop rule": if you are at least 1/8th black, you are black. This is shifting somewhat, but those with mixed pigmentation are more likely to be called black than white.

Btw, this is kinda what people talk about when they say "race is a social construct."

Assuming is fine. Last summer I had an old white lady walk up up to me on the beach and say "excuse me, do you speak English?" She assumed I was not American.

I thought it was common in America for bi-racial people to be shunned by both races they're a part of. We're pretty isolated from that culture in Hawai'i though, since most people are mixed race here.

I think it depends on where you live, but pretty much most black people, from my experience, have someone that's biracial/multi-racial in their family, so I've never witnessed any shunning on that end

Oh Im accepted just fine anywhere. I was fortunate to grow up in one of the most diverse towns in the country. Ive had black, white, jewish, gay, trans, asian, etc friends.

And tbh Im pretty thick skinned. I dont get offended by anything. If you're a friend, any comment or discussion is on the table. If you aren't, nothing you say can effect me.

I was just genuinely curious about this topic and the responses I would get.

Someone will make a casual comment about your race. When you correct them, they argue with you?

And it's never people of color. It's always been white people (obviously not every white person).

PoC will simply say "Oh my bad" and correct themselves. But those specific white people will argue until they are blue in the face that you are the race they say you are.

although it's more common(for me) to come across White people trying to tell me that being a Mexican American means I'm Latin.

it gets old having people trying to tell me what I am instead of just accepting whatever the hell I told them, lol.

branco (white), pardo (brown), preto (black), amarelo (yellow), and indigenous (red)

Academically speaking, all of us whose heritage comes from places in Central America and South America are Latino. Hispanic is a bit more difficult, in that it related to our ancestry in Spanish-speaking origins (so just like Latino, except that Spain is included in this and Brazil is excluded).

Unless they're saying Latin = Ancient Rome, in which case lol.
