that's one of those things that should have changed by now, since it's a racist notion.

it's based on the idea that when people of two races procreate, the child will be considered as a member of the "lesser" race

In America, race has traditionally been defined by the "one-drop rule": if you are at least 1/8th black, you are black. This is shifting somewhat, but those with mixed pigmentation are more likely to be called black than white.

Btw, this is kinda what people talk about when they say "race is a social construct."

This is a dumb question. I mean, if your black side is more prominent looks-wise, of course people will assume you're black as opposed to White.

Assuming is fine. Last summer I had an old white lady walk up up to me on the beach and say "excuse me, do you speak English?" She assumed I was not American.

But what I mean is, if it known that I am both, why am I still labeled only black?

I think it depends on where you live, but pretty much most black people, from my experience, have someone that's biracial/multi-racial in their family, so I've never witnessed any shunning on that end

All I can say, is, I guess you just don't fit America's vision of what a typical Caucasian man looks like, despite being half Caucasian.

And looking at Kaepernick, I always assumed he was of Arab or North African descent.

That's interesting and something I have observed in my experiences.

Black people tend to consider half-blacks and quarter-black people as being full members of the black community.

But a half-Asian or quarter-Asian is never seen as fully white by white people or fully Asian by Asians and tend not to feel accepted by either community. I think there's even a subreddit for this group.

Whites also generally don't consider half-whites or quarter-whites as white people and as fully the other race they're mixed with.

Black people seem almost unique in treating people mixed with their race as full members of their race.

I wonder why this is.

Blacks are more desperate for acceptance in ways that Asians and Whites are not and will not ever have to be.

Oh Im accepted just fine anywhere. I was fortunate to grow up in one of the most diverse towns in the country. Ive had black, white, jewish, gay, trans, asian, etc friends.

And tbh Im pretty thick skinned. I dont get offended by anything. If you're a friend, any comment or discussion is on the table. If you aren't, nothing you say can effect me.

I was just genuinely curious about this topic and the responses I would get.

For the other mixed race people, have you ever had this before?

Someone will make a casual comment about your race. When you correct them, they argue with you?

And it's never people of color. It's always been white people (obviously not every white person).

PoC will simply say "Oh my bad" and correct themselves. But those specific white people will argue until they are blue in the face that you are the race they say you are.

Academically speaking, all of us whose heritage comes from places in Central America and South America are Latino. Hispanic is a bit more difficult, in that it related to our ancestry in Spanish-speaking origins (so just like Latino, except that Spain is included in this and Brazil is excluded).

Unless they're saying Latin = Ancient Rome, in which case lol.
