That happened to me a long time ago...shit was literally photo copied....i said "Dude...i can't accept this" and started laughing which isn't like me because i usually tried to stay professional when a customer did something dumb...He just took it back and said "oh ok, i get it" and walked out.

As a retailer you're suppose to keep it and ask for another form of payment so it gets out of circulation, but if the customer insist on you giving it back, you give it back because it can escalate to a point where you can get injured. If a customer did get scammed and does not know it's fake, you can call the cops and they'll stay around to give the cop a report of where they got it, but no one ever does that.

I have heard of some shady business that will claim a bill if fake and just take it, even though you know it's real, at that point you should also offer to call the cops to come and check it out, have them not take the bill out of sight though.

Yeah, a lot of places discourage or outright ban it (rightfully so since most people don't know how to distinguish between real and forged currency).

Most people don't know about it but I've had it actually happen to me once at a jack in the box after I sold my dirt bike to someone. I was pissed as all hell when they were like "ya, sorry but you're just fucked". I educated myself real quick on the signs to look for and the texture and all that but it's still hard because now we have currency that passes pretty much every test but the laser ones at the bank (to my knowledge).
