Shit on Trump or Obama or Bush II or Bill all you want, but they were definitely more charismatic than any of their opponents. How about Bush vs Dukakis? Just a kid then so I don't remember.

Not since the introduction of televised debates I guess.

Maybe you can argue Nixon v Humphrey was toss up of low charisma

Obama's charisma was one of the main reasons he won IMO, he had loads of it.

Was Bush Sr. really that charismatic? He never struck me as a charismatic guy, hence why he was a 1-termer.

Not really, but Dukakis came across as such a buffoon that by comparison HW looked like he had his shit together

Nixon, probably

No wait, I'd say Carter

I'd have to agree lol.

Carter was worse but Nixon in his televised debates were total cringe.

W Bush had the charisma of an empty carton of eggs and beat both Gore and Kerry.

Before that actually. You could hear them on Radio.

He got a surge of popularity after 9/11 and was still riding on it when he beat Kerry.

Carter was essentially the "Trump" of '76.
Half the republicans were disappointed by Reagan's loss to Ford, and either protest-voted or stayed home.

And Gore and Kerry were both widely viewed as massive bores.

Simple fact is that appearing energetic and actually having a pulse is a positive to many.

There's an interesting study tho from the JFK Nixon debate. People who listened via radio felt it was much closer in terms of who won the debate. People who watched it via TV, the first ever televised debate, overwhelmingly picked JFK. JFKs looks v Nixon's awkwardness, constant sweating etc. JFK came through as much more charismatic when watching.

TV debates definitely changed the game re: charisma for election cycles.

Though she did win the popular vote (without ilegals, that's silly to think that's why she won.)

Dubya didn't have the same kind of charisma Bill Clinton and Obama had, but he did have a down-to-earth "I could have a beer with him" persona that resonated with a lot of people. Which I guess is a different type of charisma.

Seriously, that was so awkward and painful to listen to... Nothing says "out of touch" like trying to appear hip to pop culture then referencing a dying fad.
