This is horrible and would be equally horrible if he wanted to convert to any other religion. Despite me being atheist i think everyone should follow what they feel is right.

I've thought about it before, but whats the point of coming out as anything? You can do whatever you want, no need to tell people who can only react neutrally or negatively. Even a positive reaction is pretty neutral and worthless, I mean who cares? I just don't see the point in endangering yourself when there's no reward for the risk, when you can just as freely not and then do whatever.

I was pretty much disowned by my mom (and ultimately much of the rest of my family because they would never pick me over her) because I'm an atheist. She is a generally very abusive and manipulative person and had known about it for over ten years but she went through an emotionally turbulent time and decided to take it out on me.

The breaking point was when she tried to humiliate and demonize me to my little nieces and nephews on Christmas morning a few years back. She didn't just tell them that I wasn't going to get presents, though, she said I wouldn't get good things in my life.

Joke's on her, though, because forcing us out of each other's lives has been the best thing she's ever done for me. I only wish it happened sooner.

Yes, obviously the parents in TC's video wouldn't have questioned it at all if the son just decided not to go to church or celebrate Christmas. I forgot we live in a world where parents allow their children to do whatever they want without question. If only he hadn't said he's an atheist...

Unfortunately, this is a common reaction from Christian families (and I imagine most other monotheistic religions as well). For anything else, regardless of what you are or do, you can at least be saved by the fact that "you're still a Christian." But if your an atheist? All that goes away, and you're now running contrary to the fundamental core beliefs the family clings to. The more deep into the religion the family is, the harder that pill becomes to swallow.

So when your family asks you to pray or go to church with them but you don't want to because you don't believe in go anymore, how would you explain why you didn't want to do it? Your only options are to lie and go along with it or admit that you're not religious anymore

Can't answer for the other guy but just personally, in regards to prayer, I'm never asked to lead anything so it doesn't come up. If they want to pray before a meal and I happen to be there, well that's fine, why would I make a big deal about that?

In regards to going to church, I've been honest with my mom about not liking to go to church. I told her that I've honestly never liked going to church much, so she doesn't ask me to go anymore. No lies but I've still never told her fully that I'm an atheist.

Some people aren't wired that way. To some people, not saying what you believe in or who you are out of fear or wanting to avoid the reactions of others is living a lie. And they don't want to do that. And honestly they shouldn't have to. There's a big difference between just telling any and everyone that you're an atheist for no real reason versus telling someone in the appropriate context (like a parent when they want to know why you don't want to go to church or pray, etc.)

You'd rather avoid the conflict, which is cool but some people would rather not feel like they're hiding who they are. Neither approach is incorrect, and both are pretty easy to understand.

On some level I understand this but on another level, I don't agree personally.

IMO,my atheism isn't really a defining feature or thing about me and also IMO it's 100% my business and not anyone else's. There's all sorts of little things that my mom doesn't know about me and doesn't need to know about me and I kinda put it into that same category.

Well that's why I said context is important. Do I think it makes sense to just randomly walk around telling people you're an athiest if it doesn't come up naturally in a conversation? No, not really. But in a child and parent situation I imagine it's very easy to have that come up. All the kid has to say is that they don't want to go to church anymore. At that point the parent can either say "You're going, I don't care" (like my dad did) or ask "Why don't you want to go anymore?" And at that point the kid has a choice to make. They can either make something up or they can tell the truth. I understand both responses to that situation and it completely depends on the individual what they would do in that scenario.
