Feels good mane.

Just finished my second of three weeks of interviews. I already have 3 offers with four more interviews coming this week.

Any of these law firms would be paying me about $35k to work for them next summer after my second year of law school ends, which typically leads to a full time offer for a $200k job. Of course I'll essentially be their slave, but I'll be a well paid one.

where do you go for law school? what'd you get on your LSATs?

I go to a T6 law school. Scored 165 on LSAT but I got that minority privilege to give me a boost lol

I'll probably just choose a firm where I can be a generalist in litigation. Maybe I'll choose to specialize when I get more senior, but I'm avoiding any firms that will make me specialize early on.

I was in law school, but dropped out after the first year.

I'm honestly not sure how anybody could want to go through with it. It seems so soul crushingly competitive, demanding, and "fake" that no amount of money would have been worth it to me.

I don't love or hate law school, but I think being a minority lawyer at one of these top ranked schools removes a significant amount of stress because firms are under pressure to diversify. They're falling head over heels to hire people like me.

Yeah it's insane. Of course law schools take away huge chunks of financial aid in response to the pay, so I won't actually get to take much home.

No offense to you, but that's bull shit. I might has well never have gone if I was already at a disadvantage for being a white male.

You know, no offense to women, but women definitely get something a of a hiring advantage when it comes to engineering jobs.

But you do hear stories of office sexism with certain male dominated offices. Not a ton, but enough to understand it is a consideration when women choose their first office out of college.

I dropped out because I didn't enjoy the work at all and because I didn't want to bury myself in $80,000 more debt, forcing myself to stick with a career I hated.

The minority advantage is still bull shit.

Meh, we can talk all day about advantages.

Probably 70% of the students in my class are the children of upper-middle class or straight upper class people who have had every advantage in life thrown at them. Legacies, professors or administrators for parents, private LSAT tutoring, loads of money and connections. Hard for me to feel bad about it coming from a working class minority background.

Same experience for me. Only difference is that I came from a working class white family. I was literally the only person in my classes taking notes on paper and my laptop was so shitty that the fan would whir and crackle when I had to bring it in for exams >_>

I hated going to the social events with the class. We were expected to stand around and make small talk, which most of my upper class classmates were all about. I even avoided the bars they went to and stuck to dive bars.

Ah so these are like summer internships then, not the full fledged attorney at a firm thing.

Minority disadvantages? Well, of course I would dislike being disadvantaged.

Now about affirmative action, I have a lot of gripes with how it works at the present moment, and ultimately I don't think it's very effective. But I think a form of affirmative action is worth supporting. On a personal level, it does make me feel somewhat awkward to receive a benefit for my racial and socioeconomic background, but I am ultimately comfortable taking it for a variety of reasons. Namely, the college/law school admissions process is not a meritocracy. Many if not most of the students at elite universities have benefitted from an extremely unequal share of resources, which would otherwise crowd out students from certain minority backgrounds if there wasn't some equalizer. To put it in perspective, although my LSAT scores are a bit lower than the median at these top law schools, I am in the top 1% of test takers from my racial background. If they didn't take students like me the number of minorities in these schools would be negligible.

On another note, what rational reason would there be for me to turn down a benefit given to me? I didn't design the system. If these schools don't want me, they have every right to turn me away. I would be foolish to turn them down.

Pretty much, but they traditionally lead to full time offers.

Well for what its worth I think there should be a bigger push for affirmative action to take socioeconomic background into account, especially in Trump's era. Too many law schools and universities are echo chambers for wealthy, white urban liberal types.

Do you think that only merit based applications are viable, or these affirmative action type advantages are needed?

See post #22 for my full thoughts.

But basically, I dont think there is a merit based application system, nor will there be one in the forseeable future as long as huge disparities in resources exist along racial and economic lines. So yes, I certainly think some form of affirmative action is necessary.

Interview former employees of those three firms to figure out who the best slave masters are. Every little bit helps in that foxhole. It could be the difference between 75 hours a week and occasional time off (with advancement potential) or a 100 hour per week churn and burn environment. And 80k is nothing if you can reasonably land one of those 200k jobs and resist living the high priced, guilded cage lawyer lifestyle.
