Never had a "real" pet before (I've had a goldfish), even while growing up.

Stereotypically, this is what I know, before I delve further in my research:
Cats are assholes who don't care about anything but themselves. They are easy to take care of as they are independent. Dogs are like little babies that never grow up. They need constant attention, care, and walks to let them relieve themselves. But they return your love and care, and can be trained to do just about anything.

"Cats are assholes who don't care about themselves" isn't always true, cats generally just have personality beyond the "plz love me" dog personality. I've had cats who were mostly indifferent to me outside of when they needed something as well as cats who greet me at the door and always want to play and cuddle

People who say this either haven't owned a cat or don't understand them. Cats express love differently than dogs.

One of my cats is a clingy cuddle bug.

My friend had a cat that loved to be petted and loved.

But i think they are better starter pets cause they are more independent. Doesnt mean they arent work though.

Puppies require a ton of attention
