I liked it, it just didn't have a lasting impression after I finished it.

why is it bad? too much referencing? too much plot armor?

The MC is a little bit hard to like. And it felt like the author tried to stuff every interesting thing he'd ever watched or listened to into the novel. But the journey was still interesting

I liked the book, but it might be my bias because I understood all the references. It would not have had the same impact or made much sense, if I wasn't familiar with them. Other than that, the basic plot was predictable, though it was cool to imagine a virtual world that could easily become reality for us one day.

eh, the references were mostly 80s stuff since the other author obviously grew up in the decade, so w/e. only things i didn't like about the book was (not really spoiler but will block out) how quickly the ending happens and the writing is just kind of meh.

otherwise, super fun read and can't wait for the movie.

It's a terribly written book that uses nostalgia to cover its flaws. It's filled with plot armor, deus ex machina, bad twists, and horribly written scene.

My particular favorite is towards the end, the character discovers after a large battle a door he needs to go through is floating in midair, but it's ok because he discovers a pair of rocket boots immediately after. They are never mentioned before or after.

Jesus. Don't listen to this and just have fun. OctilIery obviously doesn't know how to have fun.

Go read Armada and tell me he's a good author.

IF you're ok with just nostalgia, it's entertaining, but it isn't a good book.

Want to read a good book about classic gaming? Try either Lucky Wonder Boy or You. Both are loads better than Ready Player One and actually tackle the ideas of nostalgia and what it means to us beyond "Hey wasn't WarGames a cool movie?".
