I know that I want to braise it - e.g. spice rub, short bake(or sear), then 8 hours in the slow cooker. So I have the method down.

What I'm having a crisis over is the recipe. I'm thinking something with cider and smoky barbeque, so if nothing good comes up I'll just wing it, but I'd prefer to follow a recipe.

Like heaven on a plate. If I did it again I would brine it for longer, be less fussy with the recipe (it was a pain in the ass getting the marinade recipe so exact, and not really necessary). I learned that panini is a bad substitute for pan cubano. Soft french baguette was a much better option.

Eh, I'm not so keen on this one, but I appreciate the suggestion. I feel that recipe is ok, but became a bit of a "college kids who dont know how to cook good" meme on the internet.

In a slow cooker i like to do carolina style. Sear with just salt and pepper. Use cider vinegar for your liquid when you drop it in. Strain it out when its done, save a couple cups of liquid and mix in red pepper flakes, cayanne, hot sauce, and some brown sugar into it. Add that back to the shredded pork.

1 1/2 cups apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons hot pepper sauce
2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes

Just vinegar? Isn't that kinda...harsh? For lack of a better word.

Apple cider vinegar. It gives it some tang, but after you mix in the other stuff it balances it out with a bit of heat and sweetness.

I can cook fairly well, although most of my recipes are used for grilling. I randomly found a Dr pepper pulled pork recipe posted on here and I tried it. My wife said it tasted like pulled pork from a restaraunt. I also make a home made BBQ sauce so that may have been it too.

sounds more like you're letting your snobbiness get in the way of having some dope pulled pork.

not like pulled pork is a high class food anyway, it's backyard bbq type shit, and dr pepper pulled pork is the real deal

What I mean to say is I've done it before and it was good, but I'm looking for something different.

Missed this the first time around. Looks good. I was actually considering throwing in some beer or cider, though

I'm curious - why add the spices after shredding the pork, and not to begin with?

I do the Dr pepper pulled pork recipe on /r/slowcooking but use root beer instead.

Before I put bbq sauce on I make nachos, then mix in the bbq and have pulled pork sammich for the leftovers.

Youll probably end up with quite a bit of liquid, i only set aside 2 cups to add the spices into.

You add the spices to the 2 cups of liquid set aside, making a carolina style sauce, then mix that sauce back in the shredded pork. wasnt real clear on that.

K, I'm going for it. Starting with an overnight dry rub of various things like chilli, pepper, garlic, thyme, sugar, salt, etc.

You know if I'd thought about it I'd make char siu pork. I'll do that next time.

Ok holy shit, turned out phenomenal.

I made up the sauce for the slowcooker with bbq, ketchup, cider, beer, some of the left over spice rub, sugar and some of the burnt garlic from the searing of the pork. I made up a bed of shallots and onions for the slowcooker. Put it in for 8 hours.

After all that was said and done, I finished off the pork in the oven to get it crispy, and then toasted a brioche bun on the inside.

Pork, coleslaw, pickles, american mustard, and toasted brioche bun. V happy with this.
