Jack Nicholson basically ruined Jack Torrance. Shelley Duvall as Wendy was another lolworthy casting choice. Then he went as far as to change the premise of what Shining actually was, and did a piss poor job of explaining it.

TC how do you feel about Alfred Hitchcock's tendency to buy book rights just to use their title and write a whole new story to go with them.

Was that disrespectful to the original material?

He bullied/worked her to the point of near-insanity while they were filming The Shining, the most jarring instance of this was in the scene where she was swinging a bat at Jack Nicholson on the stairs; the scene took 127 takes before Kubrick was satisfied, and the physical labor she had to put in was overwhelming. Her timid nature throughout the movie was barely even acting, as she was legitimately frightened given what Kubrick put her through, her hair was literally falling out from stress at one point, and people argue that her experience with the production of the movie is one of the reasons for her current mental instability. :(

Survival kit contents check. In them you'll find:

- One forty-five caliber automatic
- Two boxes of ammunition
- Four days' concentrated emergency rations
- One drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills
- One miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible
- One hundred dollars in rubles
- One hundred dollars in gold
- Nine packs of chewing gum
- One issue of prophylactics
- Three lipsticks
- Three pair of nylon stockings.

Shoot, a fella' could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.

Stanley deliberately drove her into hysteria for the sake of forced method acting. He isolated her from the rest of the cast, browbeat her over her performances, and forced her to do takes over and over again just to mess with her until she was as on edge as her character. That scene where she's frantically swinging the bat while crying? Kubrick had her do that more than 170 times just to get that exact reaction from her.

She had trouble eating, suffered hair loss, and required therapy.
