He bullied/worked her to the point of near-insanity while they were filming The Shining, the most jarring instance of this was in the scene where she was swinging a bat at Jack Nicholson on the stairs; the scene took 127 takes before Kubrick was satisfied, and the physical labor she had to put in was overwhelming. Her timid nature throughout the movie was barely even acting, as she was legitimately frightened given what Kubrick put her through, her hair was literally falling out from stress at one point, and people argue that her experience with the production of the movie is one of the reasons for her current mental instability. :( --- ... He isolated her from the rest of the cast, browbeat her over her performances, and forced her to do takes over and over again just to mess with her until she was as on edge as her character. That scene where she's frantically swinging the bat while crying? Kubrick had her do that more than 170 times just to get that exact reaction from her.
