my mom's kidney's arent doing so well. last year she had to be put on dialysis for 6 weeks. she got better and shes just been monitoring it since.

but now her doctors say that in about a year she'll have to go on dialysis permanently, unless things change.

of course like everyone else, i went on webmd and learned that most poeple who go on dialysis die within 3 years. and i had a panic attack.

after recovering i read that the average of 3 years is cuz
1) They were dying anyway
2) they were old as fuck
3) something else killed them.

so now i dont know what to think. my dad said he's know people who've done dialysis for 20 years, but i can't find much research to say this.

im feeling extremely sad hearing that my mom is going to have to quality of life impacted (she can't travel back to the Philippines easily now), but i dont think she's going to die in the next 3 years.

i dont know. i just wanna hear what its like. how long they went on for. what happened.

i dunno CE im just freaking out.

My Grandma before she died. And my cousin, I believe she was put on dialysis when she was around 12 for an kidney issue.

She needs to keep up with her appointments because toxic metabolites build up without kidneys to filter blood. She seriously shouldn't miss a single one. Unfortunately since appointments are spaced out to about 3 days a week there is a peak and trough effect which can cause damage over time to other organs. If she is compliant she can live many years on dialysis, but she may have to have multiple surgeries for fistulae since they are notorious for closing up. She won't be able to do much traveling either since insurance can be a pain in the ass with using multiple dialysis units

Not exactly a family. History of heavy alcohol consumption occasionally, like drink til you pass out every week during his 20s (he's 35 now I believe). He's been on dialysis 3,4x a week for 4 5 years now? I've got to confirm later.

He said it's not gonna be better unless there is a donor, which is very unlikely. He's still well, occasional swelling here and there, some pains. Don't know what else to say. Hang in there man/girl.

It will reduce her life expectancy, but you're right in that a lot of people on dialysis already have a foot in death's door anyway
