I mean, there are things you'd appreciate more having played Nier (or the Drakengard series) but it's fine to just play Automata.

but you could also just watch a walkthrough of Nier on YouTube. that's what I did, since I didn't like the gameplay.

This dude also does a good summary/analysis of Nier,

It's over an hour if you watch all three parts but it's good stuff. He also covers the Drakengard games if you find yourself interested.

Wait it's connected to Drakengard?

Yup.

The whole reason Nier exists was because of an ending in Drakengard where the characters teleport into Niers world over modern day Tokyo and fight in the sky. A dragon and a huge final boss.

I dunno anything about Drakengard, except I remember seeing some ending with some weird-ass giant babies? Or was it some other game

That's one of the many endings.

The timeline is:

Drakengard 3 > Drakengard > Nier > Nier Automata

Drakengard 2 does not fit into the timeline because of various story plot holes and continuity issues.

If you want the full story of everything, here's something to help you follow the mangas, novels and visual comics and the multiple branches.

http://drakengard-3.com/blog/stuff/uploads/2015/10/DOD-NIER-timeline-20170325.png

Keep in mind the story as a whole can be extremely complicated when it comes down to the specific details and timelines.

You don't need to play the other games. What he said and a general summary of the first Nier game is all you need.

This. You can play Automata since its a condensed story in of itself. The other things are the surrounding, "bigger story" for people who want to be aware of why the world is what it is and what the background of everything is.

You don't need to play any other game to enjoy automata, the thing is self contained.

you should still play the original though since it is such a good game. And the main character is an old man, so you'll be sure to like it.

And you should dabble in Drakengard if you want a more open perspective of the world. Plus Drakengard 3 is a waifu nest.

Abso-fuckin-lutely.

Yeah. Automata was mostly developed by Platinum Games, so some of their combat and gameplay mechanics have found their way into this game, on top of aspects that made Nier what it was (great music, bullet hell bosses).

Nothing really, if you're willing to accept the potential frame rate hiccups and glitches that were reported that came with the PC version.

Play up to the first boss on normal then switch to hard if you think it's too easy. On hard, you can get one shotted fighting the first boss and the first segment of the game has no save points meaning you'll have to redo 30 minutes to one hour worth of gameplay all over again if you die.
