Just yesterday one of my younger sister's young teenage Facebook friends was happily tweeting about how she saved a baby birds in the park by picking it off the ground and putting it back in its nest. Um, no you didn't idiot, wanna know Why? Because the second mother bird comes back she'll smell your scent on the chick and abandon it. Then the chick will either starve or get eaten by predators. So, good job.

No it won't. Please don't spout that bs about how it will make the mother ignore it or whatever.
The best thing to do is to put it into the nest

I thought this was a myth? Not that I've ever done that anyway.

Is this like a comedy reference or something? Lol.

People still believe this urban myth? smdfh. Birds have a horrible sense of smell, thus touching them is not going to make the parents reject their young.

The only issue is a inexperienced person taking it back home to try to take care of it themselves which is illegal in most cases. If you see a nestling (has no feathers or immature feathers) on the ground, it's perfectly all right to place it back in the nest, but you should leave fledglings (has fully developed feathers) alone as it's natural for them to be out of the nest from time to time.

Yeah, I know rabbits and other small mammals do it, but I've never heard of birds doing it.

One time I accidentally knocked a nest off my cousin's garage. The chicks hit the ground and darted off in different directions. I remember one hiding under the sidewalk in a deep crack. I remember feeling bad cuz no way it's gonna survive in there lol

What it's a myth? I've always believed what I posted to be the case. All the journals I read growing up said not to handle wildlife, including birds, because it will cause the mother to abandon it. I guess I learned something today.

Yeah, I know rabbits and other small mammals do it, but I've never heard of birds doing it.

It just recently happened at a National park with a bison calf, tourist put it in their car to warm it up on a cold day, and the mother rejected it.
