This is where most younger people fall apart. Your best bet here is to say "Make it worth my while." Let him make the offers. If you feel they're stacking up right for you, take the deal. If not, continue the walk and see if he ups the ante.

The boss has made it clear that he's not in a good position to lose you, or would have a hard time replacing you. This means you're valuable. That means you have negotiating power.

Raises and promotions can be yours when you play your cards right.

So let me get this straight. After the $3 raise at your current job, the hourly would be equivalent to your new job, correct?

In this case, would there be a difference in work hours given to you at each job? Are the lines of work similar or completely different? Do you like your boss, co-workers, and the job itself as of right now? Fill us in a bit.

This. First of all your reasons for leaving go unchanged (unless is was strictly about money). And now your boss knows you have one foot out the door and will probably be looking for your replacement.

I like the job but theres no room to move up in the company its a family owned business.

There's a recent article talking about how it's almost never to your benefit to stay at your current job. I say switch jobs.

Then that makes your decision even easier. Plus, you never know if your boss will be looking for your replacement in the meantime.

If he's only making an offer equal to the one you got elsewhere in the first place, fuck it. If he's raising it, then it might be worth staying.
Reminds me when I was shopping for a new bed, years ago. Saw the same model in two different stores. First store I went to had it lower price. Went to the second store to check how much they were selling it when I found out the price difference. They could only lower it to equal the other store's price. Told them I'd buy it at the competitor since they couldn't make me a better deal. Price matching isn't always worth it, got to have a bonus as well in some cases.

This, after you take it they let you go later on after they found a replacement for you. It happened to another poster here who had the same topic awhile back.
