If it were in the price of the ticket, I wouldn't mind as much, because I wouldn't even know how much it is. I'm trying to buy a $24 ticket with a $7.25 service fee.

Just tell me the ticket is $31.25, and I'll be happy. I just don't like surprises.

Typically it's because you're buying them from a third party, and the tickets themselves already have a face value which is defined by the promoter/venue and printed on the tickets

This is how it works.

The promoter of an event wants to sell tickets for $40 (example).
They get 100% of this.
So, in order for the venue to profit and cover their costs, they charge $10 (example)
So, this covers fees from the company that owns the ticketing system (ticketmaster, paciolan, etc), credit card fees and staffing costs.

It's easier to just ignore the fees and consider it a $50 ticket, instead of a $40 with a bunch of fees on top of it.

And why the hell would balcony seats be more expensive? There's standing tickets for $24, or $30 for balcony seats. I could sit, and be guaranteed to be at the back of the room, or stand and get up as close to the front as I could weave through the crowd.

Oh, no. I just googled their opening act, and it's some hardcore, Cookie Monster death metal band. I might want to go for those balcony seats, idk if I want to deal with that.
