Fuckin hell.

Pretty sure they pay 20$ a day for 8+ hour days( not even counting getting there and back) and expect you to pay for your own meals and parking.

So basically tiny pay you 0$ a day and except you to work 40+ hours(that could possibly go on longer)

that sucks

the court doesn't have its own parking lot though? and I feel like even if it didn't they should cover that cost.

I got selected the last time they called me in for jury duty. Trial lasted for 3-and-a-half days, I believe.

Though at the time, I was unemployed, so the little bit of money they give you was a boon for me.

I was glad I got selected for state jury duty. I did 5 days and my last day when I got home there was a federal jury duty summons waiting for me. but if you do a state one you're exempt from federal.

I get 20$ a day. I could be making 40-100$ at my actual job instead each of those days depending on hours and tips.

I've been selected twice, but before you actually serve they asked all of us if there's any reason we shouldn't be on the jury. Both times they told us what the charges were.

That's your chance to guarantee you're never on the jury. I just launched into all kinds of BS reasons I couldn't be partial. "He looks like a nice guy. People do that in my neighborhood all the time and I think it's fine and shouldn't be illegal."

Problem is I won't know in time if I won't be selected.

I have to give work adequate notice and I can't just go "never mind can I have the already filled shifts back please" if I am not selected because I can't 100% assure that I won't be selected. Partly because I am a terrible liar and also because they might realize I am BSing them if I lay it on thick.

Ask the judge about jury nullification.

Do not do this. Not directly.

Instead ask "What happens if he's obviously guilty but we all vote not guilty anyway?"

You'll be thrown out almost immediately.

Another surefire way to get thrown out of jury duty is, if you know anything about what the case is about, demonstrating that you have a decent understanding of the laws in question will get you thrown out. There is nothing the court system hates more than a legally-informed juror. If you can cite certain codes and statutes that are applicable to the case from memory, you will literally be first in line at the exit door.

Man, I fucked my shit up. It was like 3 weeks ago but I delayed it for September.

Everyday you check the site to see if your number was called. Mine was pretty high like 2000. They only called numbers for two days up to 500 and then had no jurors the other three. If I didn't postpone, I would have been considered having served and would have been exempt for 6 years. Even it was all 5 days, my number was just too high to be called.

And the fucked up thing was I postponed Friday morning and found out that evening they post the whole schedule for the next week. Had I seen that, I would have known I wouldn't be called and not postponed lol.

it takes no effort to put a warrant out for your arrest. no effort for the computer at the hotel or dmv to say "tell this dude to fuck off." and no effort for a cop pulling you over on a routine stop that he would do ANYWAY and checking you out in his computer to find out you have a warrant.

A bench warrant is not hard to issue and yes, in NY, they come after you. Other states can differ.

Most states rarely order a bench warrant, and most states will send multiple letters and a sheriff to your door to remind you of your duty before it comes to that.

I don't think that's true anymore. It was deemed unconstitutional for cops to go through hotel guest records without a subpoena.

criminal records are public info. If you have someone's name and birthday, or their SSN, you can drive down to the police station and just ask for one. It costs $20.

Some places will have systems in place to streamline the process, like Hotels, and really large companies with high turnover like McDonalds.

Doing summons and compensation more effectively so jury duty doesn't actively harm the people who have to go through with it. For many people they miss out on wages and the cost of getting there, getting food and parking might cost more than the paychecks. Should be federal law that citizens called for jury duty are paid an hourly wage(even counting court break times because that's still a time cost) equal to their hourly wages at their work up to a certain cap. People low on the ladder often can't afford missing a week of work for compensation so laughably low that it might actually result in a net loss on Gas, Parking etc.

Also there should be a daily gas/transport/food/parking stipend for the duration of duty.

Also legal reform and better education so people are more informed and less jaded about the process and system.

Here, employers are required to pay you for the time you spend in Jury Duty. So basically if you have a job, you get the meager compensation + your normal pay.
