I did some engineering drawings we are selling to a company. My boss told me to estimate time spent on the drawings and I gave him a range of 30-60 hours, he said we will bill them $7,500 ($125-$250/hour, which is in line with the industry).

My boss is out for the weekend, so the sales guy sent the bill and readjusted it to 75 hours worked at $100/hour, to make it look like he is selling the work at a cheaper rate and that I took longer to do the drawings.

Am I right to feel pissed about this? This is part of a massive project and I have a relationship with the person we billed, now I look like an engineer that is fucking slow and dumb as shit.

Talk to the sales guy and ask him why he did it - if the reason makes sense, then there you go.

If it doesn't, bring it up with the boss or something

Yes, the other engineer as well. We're both new, we asked around and people here haven't gotten raises in over a decade. They have all taken it lying down so it's company practice now. Doesn't change the fact that he lied about it verbally twice and in writing once.

I spoke to him before he sent the email, I explained the conversation I had with the boss and that the boss' rate was below industry standard anyway. Sales guy went ahead and picked a lower rate without telling me.

I have 12+ years of negotiating experience as a buyer, in contracts and as a manager of buyers. I would love to negotiate with your salesman. I can argue hours all day and he just told me they can do cheap work.

he might be trying to improve the company relationship with the customer by cutting them a deal, but increased the hours so the cost stays the same. sales dudes at my job do stuff like this all the time so they can close a deal because they get commission
