I've been lucky with mentors, having had 3 amazing academic mentors, 2 in undergrad, 1 in graduate school.

My mom wants me to have a mentor and it's like...isn't that HER damn job, to make sure I'm on the straight and narrow.

I never had a mentor and now my life is s*** but I can't really blame it on anyone else but myself. I have to be my own mentor.

That's how I feel. I'm way too old to use it as an excuse to suck at things so I just try as hard as I can and hope it works with most things I do.

You know what's funny is I was talking to someone about this couple days ago.

I honestly do. I mean my dad was there and helped but it wasn't quite the same. You never value your parents advice as much as you should as a kid.

If I had done a few things differently since high school I'd be lightyears ahead.

Yeah, I never had any support. The posters here on gamefaqs have shown more concern and support than anyone in my actual life ever has. Which is saying a lot since I'm not exactly popular here either.

I have the hugest chip on my shoulder because of this. It's not just that I didn't have a mentor, it's that all of my siblings had someone great. My two siblings closest to my age had fucking amazing people in their lives and I had seriously shitty people and then no one. So I had to sit by and watch them get all this guidance, some of them even wasting it or taking it for granted, while I was dealing with damaged caused by my supposed mentors.

My life, for many reasons, turned into a very deep shit pit that I had to claw my way out of but I know it would've been extremely different if I had half the help they did from their mentor figures. I try not to have a pity party about it but it's fucking hard. They never realized what they had and what I didn't but always ridiculed me and put me down, which made it so much harder. Mostly why I don't talk to any of them fuckwads anymore lol.
