She wants it to be a surprise. She's also never worn any jewelry as long as I've known her. So I can't ask her to show me rings, or she'll know.

I would get her anything other than a diamond. Now is a good time to get behind the whole "diamonds are a scam / blood diamond" mentality to save yourself some money.

engagement rings are a scam anyway. The diamond company DeBeers made all the shit up in the 1930s.

Avoid yellow gold and solitaire settings. Look at the diamond closely with a loop.

first of all you need to kind of read the girl - is she into really flashy stuff, or does she like it simple? is she more trendy or more traditional? stuff like that. for color, what's "in" now is white gold or platinum, with white gold being cheaper and more popular, so it's a safe bet to just stick with one of those two metals.

in terms of the diamond, a round cut is the most popular cut and IMO looks the best, so get a round cut in your price range that has the qualities of a diamond you're interested in, and then choose the setting based on what your girl likes (feel that part out, as i said before) and use some of your own personal flair.

send me a PM if you have any questions. i bought an engagement ring last year so i like to think that i know a bit about the process. it was a surprise for my fiancee as well

Yeah she hates diamonds and flashy stuff. Is there anything wrong with getting like a $400 good quality super simple thing?

And who buys my ring? Her? She's poor and I don't even want a ring honestly

first of all, figure out if she even WANTS a diamond. my fiancee's friend, for example, didnt want one, and her boyfriend ended up proposing with a (much cheaper) sapphire ring that she loved.

$400 isnt too bad for a setting either, but the real cost for a ring is going to come from the diamond that goes into the engagement ring. settings aren't too expensive.

do you mean the wedding band? you can get those together once you're engaged. a man's wedding band is really cheap, i think i paid like $200 for mine and i got a really nice one
