Independent anti-virus testing organization:
https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/windows-10/

Has the following as a top rated product (in alphabetical order):
*Avira Antivirus Pro 15.0
*Bitdefender Internet Security 21.0
*Kaspersky Lab Internet Security 17.0
*Norton Norton Security 22.9
*Trend Micro Internet Security 11.0 & 11.1

Shame that I can only get Norton, since that's the only American company out of all those... can't trust foreign software anymore, what with all this news about how Kaspersky is filled with mobsters, government ties, etc.

Why do you say that? Norton used to be the "best", then in early/mid 2000s, got so bogged down and shitty (which led me to ditch Norton for other softwares, like Zone Alarm, Avira, Kaspersky...). But I heard (and I found through independent testing agencies) that Norton got so much better.

Haven't a single problem using Malwarebytes + Windows Defender. To be honest, unless your hobby involves visiting shady sites without an adblock or there's a lack of common sense, protecting your machine against viruses isn't that hard of a task.

because they really don't do shit and are resource hogs

your best protection is to use shit like ublock and just good judgement, because most of the malware these days get past paid av's unless they are old as fuck. usually the end user CHOOSES to install the malware and AV's can't do shit about people being idiots.

people in the IT industry laugh at AV's, no shit

edit: also malwarebytes is now a resource hog. only install and run it if you're just running a scan, otherwise don't keep it installed. it is getting worse and worse.

Because as others have said a combination of free apps can protect you nearly as much as paid software so unless you regularly download from shady links paid software is a waste of money

I don't understand why you need protection. I just scan every few months and don't go on fucked sites. I suppose I'm asking for it eventually though.

actual IT companies or just companies that have an IT department (or outsource their IT)?

I've worked in the IT industry for 5+ years at 2 different companies and I couldn't tell you 1 person that worked at these companies and used an AV on their personal home computer. They'd put a cracked version of paid malwarebytes on sometimes but right now that has become a resource hog as well.

The only "IT" I've ever worked where AV's were a big deal was Staples EZ tech and they'll try to sell you anything there.

people with McAfee or norton are asking for it also is my point.

by the time McAfee or Symantec labs prevent a malware from attacking your computer it is usually too late. The people making malware are always a step ahead of the AV companies.

Kaspersky and ESET and Bitdefender used to be the best paid ones but I don't know now. McAfee sucked but just got bought by Intel so it is supposed to be a little better, but in the end free Avira/AVG or nothing is ok.

Is malware protection really important if you hardly ever download anything or visit sketchy sites? Is there anything to worry about if you never click ads?

Yes because ads themselves can deliver viruses just by loading in your browser. Gamefaqs was notorious for this in the past

If you're computer and net savvy, and by that, I mean the vast majority of the users of this site, then all you need is Windows Defender.

I haven't had a virus detected in probably a decade. Smart browsing will always beat out a program looking for heuristics. My friend on the other hand, had 148 separate detections when I ran malware bytes on his PC. PEBKAC.

You don't even have to click ads for them to install shit onto your system. Just the act of them appearing will do that.

That's why uBlock Origin is essential.

Businesses always go with paid protection, just like they always paid for the license for WinZip. There are a number of different reasons for this from insurance purposes to reducing legal liability if something goes wrong.

I don't know of a single individual who works in the tech industry who uses paid AV software on their personal machine. I'm sure they're out there but they would be in the tiny minority.

One would be me, but mostly because i installed it back before windows defender was "good enough" and couldnt be assed to remove it
