What has she done that is so abhorrent? The extent of my knowledge of this woman is that she made some youtube videos about how there were a lot of sexist tropes in a bunch of video games, and then a lot of gamers lost their shit and started sending her death threats 24/7.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that a lot of games, esp older ones, are kind of sexist because they were basically made by nerdy dudes for teenage boys (i.e. fighting games with huge boobies jiggling everywhere and revealing costumes, shit like tomb raider, etc). like i didn't really think this was a point of contention, it's kind of a given.

so why the hate?

She is not wrong on everything she says. It's just the way she words her arguments. if she said it without attacking the target audience (the evil straight men) I can guarantee that people would react differently over exactly the same argument.

Although I disagree with the first sentence, I do agree with the rest of the post. Her arguments would be better received if she conducted her argument with more context and substance than simply firing off SJW buzzwords and personal attacks on "white males."

It's not the quality per say, it's the fact a literal teenager could make the same videos she did with zero dollars. Where did that $150 grand go? Straight into her pockets that's where.

You want to know why Anita Sarkeesian gets so much hate? Well lets look at her track record:

-when she first started her kickstarter she lied about all the hateful messages she received to drum up more support for her kickstarter
-lied about "loving" games
-stole lets play footage for her videos
-presented not only piss poor research but didn't even use the scientific method once
-lied about the games she was talking in her videos on top of constantly presuming the intent of the developers (which is admittedly my biggest issue with her)
-constantly bitches and whines about "straight male gamers"
-blames "straight white males" for all the violence that happens against women
-never responds to her critics except to only call them "harassers"
-inserted herself into a controversy that had nothing to do with her
-got into a pissing match with Zoe Quin and Brianna Wu on who was the bigger victim
-tries to tell game developers how they should make their games
-goes to the UN to advocate for internet censorship because she can't handle her critics
-four years and a quarter of a million dollars later has never finished her tropes vs women series
-almost forgot that she even made up tropes like "fighting fuck toy"
-lied about all her critics being "straight white males"
-"everything sexist, everything is racist, everything is homophobic and you have to point it all out"
-whines about misogyny where there is none (otherwise known as making mountains out of mole hills)
-harasses others then claims she was harassed
-shuts down anything she can't control
-constantly went against both police and FBI recommendations that she stay away from social media while they conducted their investigation


and this is off the top of my head. Now I'll just quietly wait here for someone to insult me like calling me an incel (whatever the fuck that is)

They targeted gamers.

Gamers.

We're a group of people who will sit for hours, days, even weeks on end performing some of the hardest, most mentally demanding tasks. Over, and over, and over all for nothing more than a little digital token saying we did.
We'll punish our selfs doing things others would consider torture, because we think it's fun.
We'll spend most if not all of our free time min maxing the stats of a fictional character all to draw out a single extra point of damage per second.

Many of us have made careers out of doing just these things: slogging through the grind, all day, the same quests over and over, hundreds of times to the point where we know evety little detail such that some have attained such gamer nirvana that they can literally play these games blindfolded.

Do these people have any idea how many controllers have been smashed, systems over heated, disks and carts destroyed 8n frustration? All to latter be referred to as bragging rights?

These people honestly think this is a battle they can win? They take our media? We're already building a new one without them. They take our devs? Gamers aren't shy about throwing their money else where, or even making the games our selves. They think calling us racist, mysoginistic, rape apologists is going to change us? We've been called worse things by prepubescent 10 year olds with a shitty head set. They picked a fight against a group that's already grown desensitized to their strategies and methods. Who enjoy the battle of attrition they've threatened us with. Who take it as a challange when they tell us we no longer matter. Our obsession with proving we can after being told we can't is so deeply ingrained from years of dealing with big brothers/sisters and friends laughing at how pathetic we used to be that proving you people wrong has become a very real need; a honed reflex.

Gamers are competative, hard core, by nature. We love a challange. The worst thing you did in all of this was to challange us. You're not special, you're not original, you're not the first; this is just another boss fight.

I occasionally agreed with her on a few point, but she tends to demonize gamers usually on her next line. So I was still annoyed. her target audience is not ears she is able to reach.

Because a lot of people don't like what she has to say. I don't always agree with her, but much of what she's pointed out is true, and rather than be angry over the baked-in inequities in our society and culture, some shoot the messenger for bringing them bad news.
