Tales is... Tales.

Ys are action platformer RPGs (except for the first few are 2-D only).

Of the three, Nep-Nep will probably scratch the itch for a classic JRPG the most, but Ys is the best in overall quality among the three.

Tales is great but hit or miss with some titles, most of the ps3 and ps4 ones are totally great though

None of which are on Steam. Berseria isn't Classic. It's Classic-styled but it's still an unconventional style.

Seems like you've never played it. There is no action in the game at all. It's not even ATB or any shit. It's strictly turn based. and the only way you could say the story is meme-y shit is if all you ever saw from the game were screenshots of the memes. The memes are an extreme minority of the game and usually only seen in the chirpers.

Berseria is one of the best Tales games in a while. You'd need to play the trash that is Zestiria first to get a real appreciation for Berseria.

Symphonia is ok but honestly it's a port of the crappy PS2 version. You should play the gamecube one if you can.

I dunno about this I've been playing it recently with some friends and it's honestly a mess

it starts a gazillion plot threads and just forgets about all of them while continuing to start new ones, the pacing is awful, the level design is awful, the voices are generally not very good and the whole thing is extremely disappointing

The only other one I've played is vesperia and while it sort of did that I don't remember it being anywhere near this bad. For example (xillia spoilers):

There was a part where elize had her doll stolen and the thing that gives it its memory and personality removed by some bad guys. It was reset back to being completely personalityless and she was very sad and the group decided to chase after the bad guys... they made it all of one city, got distracted with something else, stopped chasing them, and a few scenes later the doll just mysteriously turned back to normal

like at this point I'm legitimately wondering if the writers just forgot what happened earlier in the story because things just connect so poorly

You probably weren't using the right combat set up.

Once you have EX moves, you basically just spam the combo abilities to build up your EX meter, and then spam the EX moves over and over again.

I played a bit of Tempest ( the 1st one I played) and Phantasia GBA. Probably less than 1 hour each
