And know that I and all of my loved ones can get medical care as needed without crippling debt, as opposed to making minimum wage and having to hope I don't ever contract a serious illness, chronic disease, or suffer serious injury

And know that future generations will actually have access to quality education

And that fewer people will be without food abd home

And that the nations infrastructure won't crumble

But yeah tax increases that, for all but the most extremely wealthy, would be fairly insignificant are bad corporations are people socialism is bad we need more tanks

Most of the world agrees with you. It's conservative America that is the ignorant and detrimental outlier.

Did you know that Norway only spends 2% more of their GDP on government spending compared to the US?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_spending#As_a_percentage_of_GDP

Look at the column on the right. That means that the (various levels of) US government spends nearly as much as they do in Norway. So the problem is not simply that we aren't spending enough. The effectiveness of our spending is terrible.

I'll also mention that much more of that US spending is financed by debt than what the Norwegians are doing (which is why the first column that displays tax revenue is much lower for the US). In the long run, one consequence of this is that interest on our debt can become a significant amount of the budget. The benefit though is lower tax rates.

You don't need higher taxes for that. Example - Chicago public schools spend around $16,000 per student per year. They're still shitty schools despite getting plenty of cash.

Classic example of continuing to throw money at a problem that isn't that simple. It's hard for some people to fathom this, but you can't simply solve all problems in the world by writing continuously bigger checks.

Central planning redistributing is nonsense and intitates people to fail. If you want free healthcare go to Cuba and Venezuela and enjoy that service. And to the guy mentioning Norway, most Euro countries barely commit to what they're supposed to pay in NATO, thus saving tons on military defense at the expense of the U.S. footing that billing for them.

The commitment is 2% of GDP, Norway is spending 1.5% of GDP [1]. So yeah, they need to up it a bit to meet their commitment, I agree, but it's not huge enough of a difference to say that their system wouldn't work without 0.5% of GDP they aren't spending on military. Also when it comes to healthcare, the US currently spends more per person than any other country when you add public and private expenditure, so our healthcare system is completely broken regardless of the tax situation.

Bringing up Norway's spending can be really misleading. Yes, they spend just a little bit more, but they're also spending it on stuff that is more regulated to avoid ridiculous price hikes. Like medicine. The US spends the most money on medicine in the world. Great job, capitalism.

I don't think that is actually what is going on outside of medicine. They spend better on healthcare that we do, but I don't think it's as simple as saying they are more regulated and we are more capitalist. The US healthcare system is a broken clusterfuck that is just straight up corrupt and neither capitalist nor socialist. It's just plain shit designed to funnel money to the corporations whose lobbyists practically designed it in the first place. That's not what capitalism actually means, but the term gets thrown around so loosely that it's basically lost any meaning.

No, my point is just that it's not necessarily as simple as "they're doing it more efficiently". Another big difference is wages in general. A yearly wage/salary (idk the difference) can be much lower in Norway while still being not only livable, but actually quite high. There are a lot of reasons why the costs would be different, so that comparison is very crude.

I don't pay a shitton in taxes and still get that healthcare coverage. Glad to live in Canada these days. Only the dumbest of motherfuckers would ever think a right wing, capitalist design for social services would be anything but a disaster, massively marking up costs and effectively holding an entire society ransom.

If people in this country had any clue about economics, they'd be all for socialized health care. The system that is in place is not a capitalist system, but a cartel system, which is not part of a free market at all.

Ok, then do that. Literally nothing is stopping you, except yourself, from giving most or even all of your paycheck to whichever charity, hospital or government agency that you approve of. I've done photography coverage for countless events where students, business people, social groups and others handed thousands of dollars of their own money to worthwhile causes. You can stop whatever you're doing right now, call to make an appointment and "pay a shit ton" to improve your community. Or you can do nothing different (I'm guessing you will pick this option), while virtue signalling on CE.

I hope someday we will put aside worldly materialism, selfishness, and greed. Our country grows weaker without enough revenue to pay its bills. Our neighbors are suffering without healthcare, without sufficient housing and education, sometimes even without food. Those of us who can afford to need to do a little more to pave the way to a brighter future for all. For the sake of the United States of America and each other, we need to pay more in taxes.
