Liberalism is by definition left wing. Most people don't know what left and right wing mean though.

Left wing: you believe in equality.
Right wing: you believe social hierarchies are inevitable or even beneficial (to you at least).

American liberalism isn't the same as European liberalism, and it feels disingenuous to conflate the two like this.

Oh... no. Not at all. The terms first appeared during the French Revolution where supporters of the King and church sat on the right of the National Assembly and the revolutionaries on the left. Where you fall on the left-right spectrum is entirely based on how you view society. Are people more or less equal or are social hierarchies a good thing?

A capitalist is a capitalist. Could be left or right wing.
