The answer lies in the ever inflating cost of producing video games. Back in the PS2/GC/Xbox era, AAA games weren't really a thing. AAA games costing tens of millions of dollars didn't start to become the market standard until the 360/PS3 erra, which is were movie licensed games started thier drastic drop-off, as movie licensed games produced on a budget were no longer able to compete with the AAA offerings.

Spiderman 2 was a classic.
