I can't even call it that anymore. They got rid of their best media feature (Snap).

It still has backwards compatibility and decent free games going for it though. You could also call it "the brand that killed Rare."

Is this going to be another topic where PS4 fanboys make up rules for why their exclusives selling less than Microsofts exclusives somehow makes them better because "Like, Halo and Gears should be selling GTA V numbers!!!"?

Nintendo is really the only company that has an "identity" at this point, IMO. Microsoft comes close with Halo and Gears but it doesn't have the clout it once had.

hopefully they complete the merge of Xbox and Windows for the next console and it just turns into a "console" style prebuilt PC instead of a totally locked system

Not really. They did Game Fuel for Halo 3 when it was just becoming mainstream to associate Mountain Dew with gaming, and then they did this thing for Halo 4. That's it. Mountain Dew and Doritos have been more of a CoD and MOBA thing for a while now.

Xbox has more of a shooter dudebro image thanks to Halo and Gears of War. Those are the flagship IP's for Xbox and those are the games that sell more on Xbox.

PS4 has managed to take a chunk of this audience too. Which is why Xbox One is getting dominated by PS4 this gen. They lost a chunk of their audience while not really gaining anything to make up for it.

I'm a big Xbox fan and the current state of the Xbox One makes me so sad.

The OG Xbox was AWESOME - it had this core vision of getting PC gamers to play on a console (hence the name) and it did that by getting some amazing PC-style games that console gamers had never seen (Halo, Morrowind, KOTOR, Splinter Cell, etc) with "traditional" console games like Fable, Dead or Alive, JSRF, GTA, that kind of stuff. There are also some amazing, industry changing features like the HDD, Xbox Live, etc

then along comes the 360 and for a while it's great, still giving a good variety of games, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Oblivion, Bioshock, CoD2, Dead Rising, more industry changing games like Gears of War, etc. There was even a solid selection of Japanese games for the system early on - MS tried hard to get Japanese gamers on board.

However, 2007 arrives, CoD4 comes out and gaming EXPLODES into the mainstream, DLC starts becoming a thing, annual franchises happen, streaming media becomes ubiquitous, the motion control gimmick is in full force, and basically what happens is that MS has trouble adapting to this new era.

They decide to focus on that casual CoD fanbase who just started gaming with CoD4, they decide to focus on the casual motion control gimmick, and they more or less ignore their core fanbase they built up for like 10 years, occasionally throwing them a bone with a new game here or there.

The Xbox One went full media center, and when that flopped, they went where they are now, where the system seems to be leaning HEAVILY towards games as a service and not a proprietary gaming machine like a Playstation or something. Idk, that's just the vibe I get.

Anyway, my point is that with the Xbox i felt as if they had a vision for a long time and then went off the rails, and while I still play their shit hoping they'll have some comeback story like Apple or something and get back on track, it's mostly just disappointment. My PS4 mostly gets the love these days when I am playing

100% agreed.

OG Xbox and 05-09 360 was fantastic (I think Microsoft dropped off with me when they tried to make Kinect happen). I feel like they've completely lost me now. They're just not an exciting company anymore.
