I have so much and would be devastated if I lost it all.

Should I go with something physical like an external hard drive or something like the Cloud? I've recovered all of the data on my iPhone after losing it last year and that was amazing.

It seems like if I had an external hard drive I would have to manually back it up periodically. And if I got a virus or some shit that would be infected too and I'd be fucked anyway.

What do you do?

Keep the external disconnected unless you're backing up or recovering.

Periodically copy everything to an external HDD, and only use the external when I'm doing so.

Though the external HDD is about 6 years old now, so I definitely should look into upgrading.

You could use software, like Acronis True Image:
http://www.acronis.com/en-us/personal/computer-backup/

That software used to be great. Then they added bunch of unneeded extra features into it, which made it shit. I heard now it's better... but I haven't played with it lately so no comment.

Everything? Never.

Most of what I have I haven't looked at in years.

I do back up my current personal projects about once a month.

Should definitely do it more often though...

I would rather use software from a better known company. I don't want to put years of hard work into the hands of some company I've never heard of.

.......................says the person that literally never backs up their data. Acronis is a well known company for a backup/data disaster recovery.

Personally, I don't backup my computer anymore. What I do is I backup my important files via OneDrive, and that's enough.

External HDD would be easy backup, but I'd also look into some cloud storage for data too so you have one redundancy that isn't in the same location as the PC in case of theft, fire, flood, etc.

Came in extremely clutch when my OS would crash upon login every time one day and all I had was my Time Machine backup from a few months ago. Everything was the way I left it and back on my Mac in about an hour or two.

Externals only hold data about 10 years right? Shouldn't you use those archival standard CDs?

Not at all. In the sentence before that I was asking if I should go with a physical external hard drive or something more like the cloud. The cloud is what I used to recover the data on my phone so it goes well.
