He is a down-to-earth authoritarian that has pretty clear strategic goals that are not necessarily evil, but definitely against the US war planners who want NATO right up to Russia's border, which is why he is constantly inflated to be this mustache-twirler by our media. He's not what I'd call a cuddly teddy bear, definitely a rival and capable of ruthlessness, but ultimately he's sitting on 20k warheads so it's pretty ridiculous to be screaming about how he's a thug.
