A 1 hour one way commute would make it impossible to get a second job, so minimum I would accept is 32k per year.

I think it also depends on your stage in life. I was living at home and going to school. I didn't have a girlfriend or other obligations really.

Now I make 55k and have a 3 minute commute. You'd have to pay me about 20-30k more to sacrifice 2 hours of being at home with my son.

I've done it once while working a windfarm project in southern Alberta. I was making around $3,500/week but it was 12 hours per day, 7 days per week (though I did get nearly every other Sunday off).

It really sucked but if given the opportunity I'd do it again for a couple months.

IMO living closer to workplace is far more worth it than living 1-2 hours away. Yes, the cost of living is expensive but at least you'll be less than 20 minutes away from work and there's a lot of stuff to do in the city. Sure you can have a nice home and lower cost of living an hour or two away, but what do you do in case of an emergency? You're pretty much fucked.

I already drive 45 minutes to work for $10/hour. Granted, its at night with little to no traffic. At worst I get caught behind someone going under the speed limit for awhile, and I'll usually pass those people.

I would prefer a shorter commute though. My thinking is that any time I've got a commute longer than 30 minutes, i'll either move, or just stay there until i find something closer.
