But if you kill the other person's spouse and the other person kills yours, you will still be suspected of killing yours, and the investigation will lead to the other person. Both are screwed.
Of course, someone else doing it gives you a chance to be somewhere else at the same time, with witnesses, as airtight aliby.

It's not like they just wanted to kill someone, and the wife was just conveniently there. There's typically an altercation that escalates to a murder or the wife did something that just really pissed him off, like had an affair or something.
