If you play your games on a different machine than other people do, expect an argument.
If you play different kinds of games than other people do, expect an argument.
If you say a game is "only" a 7/10 but most people think it's a 9/10, expect an argument.
If your favorite game in a particular series isn't the same as someone else's favorite game in that series, expect an argument.

It seems like gamers constantly want to divide themselves. Even members of a shared fandom often argue. You don't hear people who watch TV a lot argue with other people just because they have different tastes. Same goes with books, movies, and other entertainment mediums. But in video game culture, argument is everything. Some gaming arguments get uglier than arguments over politics and such.

There are many other forms of media where people can come with diverse tastes and opinions, agreeing to disagree. But why do gamers get so angry over different opinions?

I can only guess the following:

1. They want to justify their purchase in some way
2. They fear if there's too many "wrong" opinions of X then the creators will go along with those opinions instead of the "correct" opinions
3. Related to #2, they fear their favorite series will degrade or die out if there's too many "wrong" opinions about said series. Or the opposite, they feel their favorite series deserves more attention.
4. They simply don't like their opinions being seen as "wrong"

Personally I'm baffled when folks say something along the lines of "You only like/dislike X because you don't know better"

In general, yes. We simply notice the video gamer one by being video gamers ourselves. Proximity, perspective, et cetera.

I think a lot of gamers are nerds, and nerds have terrible social skills. That's about it.

Let's test that theory.

Majora's Mask is vastly inferior to Spirit Tracks, which by the way would have been infinitely better had it been developed for the iPad as a tower defense game.

Haven't played either of those games, so no comment.

No opinion on the fact that it should have been made for the superior iPad as a tower defense, the best genre to ever exist?

Eh none of the things listed in the OP bothers me. Then again I'm a true gamer who owns multiple consoles, plays many different types of games, doesn't really give a shit about reviews and accepts that not everyone will like what I like and visa versa. I don't spend my time in pointless arguments on the internet trying to justify my purchase rather than actually playing it.

I just think it's funny how completely lacking in self-awareness those who don't like to hear other people's opinions are on message boards. Message boards are about discussion and explaining the finer points of what you do and don't enjoy is going to generate discussion better than "I'm here just to say some random fact about the game that no one can actually dispute"

I disagree, but you're entitled to your opinion there.
