Critics of the bill argue that a police department that reports to church officials could be used to cover up crimes.

So what, schools and cities can't use the police to cover up crimes or something? Sounds like critics have nothing. At any rate any police force that answers to a church is only going to have jurisdiction on that church's property right? The fuck are people crying about?

Not really. If it's run like a Campus PD, they'll only have power on the the Church property.

If any of you actually read into this, here's what the actual story is:

-Some larger churches wanted security on grounds. They normally were getting that security by hiring out privately. But sometimes they had trouble finding availability.

-They made a law where now they can hire on a couple of people to serve basically similar roles to what an SRO officer or campus police would be doing.

Like the above poster said, they're not gonna have any legal jurisdiction except on their property, and even then they can be superseded by county police.

You guys act like churches are gonna start making a standing army and taking over the community. They just wanted the proper resources to look after their grounds.

Remember how the Catholic Church was molesting and raping little boys and those that did it only got shuffled around. Is it really so hard to believe that a church would use their authority to cover up a crime?

They can't enforce religious laws.

This bill is stupid, but comparing it to Sharia and police enforcing religious law is also stupid.

Not explicitly, but I would expect a police force formed and funded by a special interest group will protect that special interest group over others.

You're not wrong. But if they go overboard on it, the Government could easily get rid of them. If not Alabama, then the Feds.

What does that have to do with a church's ability to cover up their crimes? We already have ample precedent of them doing just that. Do you think that the police didn't exist in areas where Catholic priests were abusing kids?
