With Season 2 of Dragonball Z: Abridged concluded, I thought it was be a great time to go back and watch all the episodes again. Of course, since this Board 8, a ranking and rating topic just has to be done, and I thought it'd be fun to just go along back to the beginning and see everything again. I figure other people may have a similar itch to see old faces and hear lines again, and really see what worked and what stuck with you.

This is a discussion and rating topic for Dragonball Z: Abridged. Spoilers for both the source material and two seasons of Abridged completed will be here, as well as, hopefully, speculation for things to come. Enjoy!

Episode 1

Rating: 5/10
- It's very strange how rapidfire and different the jokes were. I'm so used to the jokes being story-based or generally in-show while this had mics being ripped away and MySpace jokes. I'm actually surprised how strong the characters were this early. Goku was derfinitely one of the weaker members, and Piccolo had only a few good lines, but Krillin, Roshi, Famrer with Shotgun, and especially Nappa were all great. Puar wins the one-line fight over Oolong. "I make boom boom!" was probably my biggest chuckle while "Or Bulma's panties" was the worst. It set up some good Nappa/Vegeta, but it was just so out of place and bad. There was definitely some sound issues. Everything is grainy, and the timing isn't always perfect, but it was pretty damn good. Great way to start things off, and part of why it is such a success.

Episode 2

Rating: 4/10
- After the Yoshi teaser, this episode was awful. A ton of forced jokes, bad deliveries, and it was just lame. Until Piccolo started charging his attack, at least. After that, the jokes just hit dead on every time. Once the terrible, terrible arm jokes were over, the episode was awesome. The first four minutes or so really kill the momentum though so the rating isn't high. The last half was excellent, easily 8/10.

EDIT: The reason the Harvey Birdman cameo wins MVP is because, well, all three of the leads had some horrible, horrible jokes throughout (Raditz easily dropped to the bottom) and the supporting characters were good, but not funny. "Ha ha, dangly parts!" was one and done, no room for disappointment.

- This was a tough one to condense into MVP and Rating. King Yemma, Mr. Popo, and Krillin are all top-notch this episode while the score reflects its consistency and good characters in spite of being weak overall. Chichi was boring and had horrible recording, but Gohan lost because NEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRD! Just a solid episode. Like mahogany.

Rating: 3/10
- I laughed quite a bit, but it was a pretty weak episode. Princess Snake caught me by complete surprise and elicited a laugh, but the rest of it was meh. Piccolo and Gohan was good. Popo's training was decent, but not on the level of what's to come. So, the great episodes... are we there yet?

Uh yeah, as I said in the other topic, before today episode 4 was in the running for best overall episode. I have NO IDEA why you hate it so much, also, Popo is the MVP, period, end of story, no questions asked. He'll be unbelievable in other episodes as well, but he murders #4.

Episode 4 was only really good for introducing Popo. The Snake jokes fell kinda flat, and, if I remember correctly, the Pac-Man scene was pretty bad.

It might still have received too low of a rating; it had to be better than the first three episodes, at least. Or maybe the first three had ratings that were too high. I know for a fact that jokes about George Bush and Myspace were enough to stop me from watching the series until I decided to give it a chance years later.

The Snake Way stuff was dull. I like the Snake as Snake, but it dragged on way too long. Goz & Mez were absolutely horrible. And Popo's character is introduced hilariously and pecking order is established, but it may actually be one of Popo's weakest episodes IIRC. Piccolo owned the episode with screaming at Gohan to climb down or his reactions to Giant Monkey Gohan. It was just a little disappointing that Popo wasn't as amazing as I remembered this early. It was just a quick introduction which is better if you didn't know Popo yet; Popo's reign of terror has not yet come. Overall, too many of the jokes just fell flat for it be to be very high. There were a few classic moments and I got some good laughs, but a lot of it was bad.

It should definitely rank higher than episode 1. The high rating was mostly surprise how good it still was early on, even with some weak jokes (though episode 4 had weaker ones). I'll adjust at the end of Season 1.

Episode 5 - Vegeta: Kills Bugs Dead

Rating: 6/10
- It started off a tiny bit slow as Goku is still really boring, but things picked up fast with Nappa and Vegeta on Arlia. Nappa had 70% of the lines in the episode, and he was amazing. Prison b****, bug sex, wanting the giant bug as a pet, and heroism. Nappa is awesome. And yet, as good as their detour to Arlia was, the highlights of the episode are easily Guru's first appearance and Piccolo teaching Gohan to dodge. 4/11 of the laughs were just "DOOOOOOOODDGE!" Best line in the show.

Episode 6 - No One Ever Listens to the Magical Dragon

Rating: 6/10
- Not the highest marks, but the majority of the points go straight to Mr. Popo, and it was definitely weaker than last episode despite an abundance of Popo. THIS is where 'pecking order' is truly established, IMO. Not enough Piccolo or Nappa to truly shine as Krillin, Tenshinhan, Yamcha, Goku, King Kai, and Shenron had to carry most of the non-Popo time. What a shame.

- There are so many great and memorable moments in this episode. Yamcha's inspirational speech, Nappa wants to wish for pandas, Pokemon Chaotsu, Saibamen, Raditz jokes, the first rule of Popo's training, Piccolo the eunuch, "As a matter of fact, I did," and the cargo was people! Almost non-stop enjoyment with some big laughs. One of the best episodes of DBZA.


Episode 8 - Nappa's Best Day Ever

- Continued excellence! Nappa easily proves why he is the best character on the show by using Rock Smash, winning at pattycake, and sinking the whales. He also majored in child psychology with a minor in pain! This was the Nappa show. This was Abridged gold. KRILLIN LIMIT BREAK!
