Don't know why it took me so long since people have been telling me to watch it for years. It's as good as everyone said it was, maybe better.
I think one of the reasons I was hesitant is because I've seen Jim Carrey's other "serious" roles and I wasn't sure he could carry a movie like this. I was so very wrong. He and Kate Winslet worked so well together I was taken back for brief periods.
P.S: Jay Electronica made this movie 100% better. Every time the soundtrack started playing I started doing the Voodoo Man verses.

Somehow I wasn't spoiled after all these years so I got to watch it with a fresh start. There's alot of similarities between this movie and Garden State, which happens to be one of my favorite movies of all time.
Specifically they both had fantastic endings revolving around heartfelt moments pierced with bleak moments of reality.
That final scene in Eternal Sunshine where both tapes are playing and they're hearing all the worst things about each other was one of the most powerfully honest moments I can remember on film. Clementine wants to hear all the gory details and Joel wants her to hear it despite his vehement claims otherwise. And then, when I thought the movie had no more greatness to give, Jim Carrey gives a legendary "Ok". That OK stated "I know things are gonna end up bad...real bad. I know this doesn't work. I don't care. I just don't care". It was a heartbreaking scene followed by one that repaired it.
Garden State had the "So what do we do now" after the emotional reunion. Heartwarming scene followed by one that left your heart cold.

I've always been surprised how well-received this movie is. I tried to watch it with my family back when it came out and nobody could get into it at all.
Funny enough I watched Lost In Translation first last night!
I saw the trailer for Bill Murray's new movie which made me think of Zombieland which made me think " I haven't seen Lost in Translation in far too long".
Somehow, even though I've seen it 10 times, the affair between Murray/Johannson continues to be absolutely mesmerizing to me. To quote many a critics, the absences are what make that movie so poignant. There's no actual cheating but that somehow makes it feel even more "cheaty". That these 2 people are in such deep connection that no physical contact is needed because it's not some lustful desire but a crisis of closeness.
god damn it now you've put me in movie mode!

I agree. There's something agelessly romantic about their hopelessness and desperation. You keep waiting for a touch...a consummation..an acknowledgement...something, anything. You know it's not coming but you want it so badly for these 2 people. You want them to be happy even though you know separation is inevitable.

Eternal Sunshine goes back and forth with Pulp Fiction with being my favorite movie of all time. It's so powerful and damn near made me cry the first time I saw it.
