Did this as an art trade with a friend. Background is sketchy and awful, but it gets the point across. I really just couldn't look at this any longer. Maybe in a few weeks I'll polish the water.

i mean obviously practice is necessary but presumably reading up on fundamentals could make said practice more efficient

I use the tablet to sketch the basic shape, then I use my touchpad to do the lineart.. my tablet is really shaky so I can't get good lines in paint with it. Hence, lines take FOREVER.

Wow. That makes your pictures even more impressive. I absolutely cannot draw with a mouse, let alone a touchpad.

Best advice I've ever gotten is to just always have a sketchbook on you and whenever you have ~5-10 minutes to spare start drawing what's around you.

Anyone interested in a revival of b8draws? Didn't last too long last time before interest started to wane, but might be worth another shot.


And back to work on my stupid tree! Next time I do something like this I might set up a time lapse video, might be cool to watch.

LordEmbok - it depends on what you want to learn... I'd recommend becoming comfortable with your traditional style before you start to work with digital, if you plan to go digital..
I can find TONS of great tutorials on deviantart, there's one for practically everything! Just search "____ tutorial" and I'm sure you'll find plenty

and thanks Gatarix! I only had MSpaint growing up and I saw SO many digital artists that I wanted to be like... so I learned to work with it, haha. As a result I've grown to love it.

Sort of like Draw or Die, but without the competition. Every couple weeks there's a theme and anyone who wants can post drawings for the theme.

You can submit stuff for older themes, too, in case you miss one.

The first one (Draw Yourself) had a ton of submissions. Then it kind of dwindled for some reason.
I wish we could get that kind of participation again.

It's nice because it's intended to be a more friendly environment for people to post their art, without having to worry about people bashing it.

Cellphone picture so you can't really see the detail too well though.


Going to try to at least finish the tree today.
Also going to go over and refine the shading in quite a few areas once it's done.

Just need to add foliage to some of the branches and figure out the background.
Thinking of taking apart one of my pens (probably the .03),drying the ink cartridge, and soaking it in a medium shade gray and using that. Or might just do light scratches with the .03 as is.

Like it, but wish I had mixed the gray to be a bit on the lighter side. The difference in tone between the tree and the rest is more visible in person, but still would have liked there to be a larger difference.

There's definitely a sense of the tree sticking out in the foreground. (The top half of the tree blends with the background a little more, though.)
