If you'd asked me 15 years ago, I'd have absolutely wanted to go to Japan, but I'd really just feel disrespectful going to Japan at this point, cuz I don't know shit for Japanese and they really don't have a ton of latitude for that.This is a strange thought process to have. Most western tourists don't know a lick of Japanese. If you travel to the cities, you will be fine. I didn't need a translator. Some people (service industry) spoke English in the cities, But there's apps for that now. if you visit the country/non touristy areas, you'll probably need Google translate. I went to Japan for work 6 years ago for 2 weeks ago. I actually bought a hardware device for language translations, but I never used it. Total waste of money. it's crazy that in 6 years time we have real time translating. Knowing some Japanese helps, but you can get by as a tourist.
