Not the easiest question to answer....

The SAFER pick is the Snyder book. They are more of a blockbuster writer, but I don't mean that as a bad thing. They will have more self contained stories even though there is a larger arc involved, it will rely much less on knowledge of past Batman stories and lore, and it will be a much smoother read.

However, Grant Morrison is a master of his craft. Those are definitely the "better" comics, but they are perhaps not as easy to appreciate if you are not already into comics.

So, I guess if you had to get one, and don't know if you're going to go deeper in to the DC books later, Snyder's set is the better short term choice (again, the Snyder content is *excellent*, he's just being compared to a legend here). Morrison's work is much better appreciated if you are already a deep fan of the history of the comic he is working on (this is why I've always thought All-Star Superman was not a good recommendation for a first Superman story, even though it's one of the best).
