I think people accept that the probability that life exists somewhere in the universe is very high. Because of the time and distances involved, our chances of encountering it are very, very low.

People play down the theoretical existence of unknowable life billions of light years away because they don't want to be associated with those who believe flying saucers are visiting to mutilate our cattle and anally probe our meth addicts.
