I can see the argument for it, tbh.

She's definitely lapsed in visibility now, which is why personally I probably would give it to Mario, but it really is impossible to overstate just how phenomenally omnipresent she was in the late 90s/early 2000s. All the brand endorsements, the way that the current "real life" Lara like Nell McAndrew or Lucy Clarkson was guaranteed to become a household name during their stint with practically daily appearances in the tabloids and on TV, the way she graced the covers of so many non-gaming magazines.

Lara deserves as much - if not more - credit as the PlayStation marketing (or maybe it's true to say that the effect was symbiotic) for the way that the late 90s saw gaming move out of the kids' bedrooms and into the living room in terms of public perception. She's the face of the time that gaming stopped being for nerds and became cool.
