The clear mistakes of both Vietnam and Iraq was A, having more faith on the natives to be able to handle themselves on there own, and not bombing the terrorists hard enough, if they poisoned the entire area where they were hiding in the mountains they would die in time...its clear you can't half ass such things, its either total war till everyone in a hostile area is dead or don't even bother just playing whack a mole does not work, you have to burn them in the holes they hide in to remove the root of the problem.

Part of the problem in a lot of these situations is that the hostiles hide out in other nations...look at how Pakistan hid Bin Ladin for years.

I'm sure poisons only kills the enemy soldiers and nobody else /S. There's a reason why so many US soldiers and Vietnamese are still suffering the effects of Agent Orange long after the war ended.

Or maybe in spite of their domestic troubles, the civilians don't want the Americans in their countries to begin with. And do you know which other military used collective punishment to fight partisans and guerrillas? Hint it was the 40s.
