Because there's no way forward for reunification. The two countries have remained separated for over 70 years and have diverged too much to ever come together at least as long as China remains an authoritarian and borderline (if that) Orwellian nightmare to live in (from the Taiwanese perspective. ) If China tries to force reunification that would usher in WW III which neither the US nor China can really claim victory in. There would be a winner and a loser but both sides would be harmed greatly by a total war. The Taiwanese people clearly can't trust the Chinese government to give them home rule so that's out too.

Reunification isn't worth China's trouble.

Dunno, what with Russia showing WW3 didnt happen, China surely has ideas.
