It is impossible to achieve any lasting compromise when you have fundamental disagreements on issues like "Is it ok to bomb children during an ethnic cleansing campaign?" or "Should arbitrary characteristics be discriminated against?" or "Should the poor starve?". It'd be like trying to compromise on a budget with someone that thinks 2+2=3.

It is also impossible to achieve a compromise when the opposition explicitly refuses to engage in good faith and has no obligation to actually respect compromise.

Moralising about how "that's just how things get done" sounds nice and rational until you remember that historically, this is the exact opposite of how things got done. As it turns out, "sitting down and compromising is how things get done" tends to get said by people who want to ensure nothing gets done.
