I don't think anyone is saying that. It's just that bad writers use diversity as a tool for virtue signaling and pretending like their work is more legitimate. Criticizing the poorly implemented diversity is criticizing bad writing.

A bad writer is going to produce bad writing whether they have diverse characters or not.

There's nothing inherent in black, female, or gay, fictional characters that make them more difficult to write, or to integrate into a story.

The difference is that, when a minority character is written badly people claim they are 'shoehorned' in because of 'virtue signalling'. As if the problem doesn't arise from the author's lack of competence, but from his desire to include minority characters.

We're back to treating straight white male as the default. One that you better have a bloody good reason to deviate from. And that's bullshit.
